In a new series, the storytellers at Speak scope out the hottest spoken and written word events in and around our Spitalfields, east London, neighbourhood. To kick off in March, we’ve got a club reviving the age-old art of oral storytelling – and a series of events celebrating Women’s History Month.

Exhibition launch @Idea Store, E1

Women’s History Month gets well underway in east London with an exhibition on Sarah Chapman – one of the young women who led the famous Match Girls’ Strike at a factory in Bow, 1888 . The preview, hosted by her great-great-granddaughter, will feature a poetry reading and live storytelling session.

Stowtellers @Orford House Social Club, E17

Become a seanachí for the evening at this monthly storytelling club in the ‘Stow’ (hence the name), that gives budding bards the opportunity to captivate an intimate audience with their tales. You can save the (nearly lost) tradition of oral storytelling for £5, or £4 for concessions.

Rebel Book Club @secret location

“Read like a pro with thinkers and doers” at the Rebel Book Club, hosted at secret locations across London. Thought-provoking discussion around each month’s non-fiction book is followed by themed cocktails. Boujee. £15 per month.

Spend your Wednesday evening waltzing with words at London’s biggest open mic poetry night, hosted regularly at east London’s buzzing independent arts hub, Rich Mix, in Bethnal Green. Free.

Famished @Idea Store, E1

One of the many events being organised by the Alternative Arts Collective in March to mark Women’s History Month in the East End – the Idea Store in Whitechapel hosts Belfast poet and art critic Cherry Smyth , as she explores the female contribution to surviving the Irish famine through poetry and live music. Free.
