Each month, the storytellers at our Brick Lane content agency make it their mission to find the hottest spoken word events in and around east London. September is looking sprightly, with events ranging from a workshop for creative and corporate storytellers, a walking, tale-telling tour of nearby Bethnal Green – and a Bulgarian folklore bonanza.

Storytelling for beginners and improvers @ Big Wheel Theatre Company, EC1R

Now’s your chance to join the storytelling big wigs. An all-day workshop hosted by prize-winning live storyteller Jason Buck aims to help storytellers of all denominations – from creative to corporate – to polish their skills and weave first-class whimsies. £45/£30 for concessions.

Sonic Waves Live @ Looking Glass Cocktail Club, E2

This new bi-monthly event delivers everything from R&B, soul, hip hop, jazz, spoken word and “autumnal vibes” at an Alice in Wonderland-inspired cocktail lounge. For music and poetry fans alike, this event promises to spotlight new talent and soothe the ears. What’s not to love? Tickets start at £10.

You’re Hysterical @ The Star of Kings, N1

The open mic night ‘You’re Hysterical’ turns two – and to celebrate organisers are throwing a “disgustingly excessive and horrendously intense” party, with some of their favourite poets from the past two years due to perform. A jam-packed evening of expression, conversation, weirdness and wonder – it’s sure to be unlike most two-year-old’s birthday parties. Tickets for just £5.

The Serpent’s Kiss: Tales of Hidden Bulgaria, by A Spell in Time @ Irish Cultural Centre, W6

This unique storytelling event by an acclaimed British-Bulgarian company brings the magic of traditional Bulgarian tales to London audiences. Interweaving storytelling, ritual and evocative music, discover the folklore and symbols that infuse Bulgarian culture. Tickets for £10 on the door.

Bethnal Green in So Many Words @ Shoreditch High Street Station, E1

From writers like George Orwell to Iain Sinclair, many have been inspired by the human currents and unique flavour of the East End. This walking tour takes attendees around Bethnal Green – highlighting true stories of crime, poverty, survival and resilience – and sharing extracts from literary figures who have written about the area. Tickets range from £9 to £12.
