Each month, the storytellers at our Brick Lane content agency make it their mission to find the hottest spoken word events in and around east London. In July, we’ve got Caribbean tales of survival at the Victoria and Albert museum – and a Bengali retelling of the classic Greek myth of Oedipus.

This brand new event brings together emerging and underrepresented writers to showcase their short plays – each of which revolve around the theme of ‘identity’– to perform in front of a live audience. The night is about offering artists a chance to take risks and experiment with their work in a relaxed and informal environment.

The Story of Bengali Oedipus @ Rich Mix, E1
Adapting the classic Greek myth of Oedipus, this folk ballad will explore themes of free will and fatalism against a stunning backdrop of traditional Bengali folk music. Tickets range from £5 to £10 – a small price to pay for the promise of being lyrically transported to a rural village in India.

Storytelling and magic combines on this walking tour that aims to reveal the mysteries of east London, from dissolved monastic orders to ancient Roman walls and secret views of the Thames – plus displays by the Leyden Gallery’s resident tour guide and magician.

One of the most well-known spoken word events in London, this gang of word lovers offer a place of solace for any stuck creatives who need to get those juices flowing and want to practice their poetic skills in front of an energetic and supportive audience. Tickets start from £5.

Caribbean Tales of Survival and Triumph @ The V&A, SW7
This emotive narrated tour through the Europe Gallery in the iconic Victoria and Albert Museum will shed light on the untold tales of enslaved Africans who fought to overcome brutality and find freedom. Tickets are available at £10 adults, and £2 for children.
