Each month, the storytellers at our Brick Lane content agency make it their mission to find the hottest spoken word events in and around east London. In August’s roundup: an event inviting poets to ponder over the powerful link between scent and memory and a collective revisiting the bygone days of ‘café culture’ .

Hammer and Tongue @ Hysteria Bar, E8

Bringing the finest spoken word poets to the stage to take part in a slam competition – part of a UK-wide extravaganza that spotlights spoken word royalty like A.F. Harrold and Dizraeli – this is one of the most widely acclaimed spoken word events in London. Not one to be missed. Entry £4/5.

Tenx9 London storytelling night: Secret, @ St. Margaret’s House, E2

This free event in the ‘secret garden’ at St. Margaret’s House appropriately asks local storytellers to share their most entertaining, outrageous and gobsmacking tales on the subject of – you guessed it – secrets.

WORD: Scent & Memory, Gunnersbury Park Museum, W5

An afternoon of spoken word and contemporary poetry sees performers consider the poignant link between scent and memory, against the backdrop of historic Gunnersbury Park House. The event will close with readings from the ReCollection group – an arts and reminiscence group for people living with dementia. Free.

Café Culture – Get in Touch with your Inner Storyteller @ Will to Win café, NW1

Why not “ditch the box set for one night and binge on some stories told by your fellow humans instead?”. This event organised by ‘Live Café Culture’ – a collective that encourages people to get offline and connect with their fellow human beings (imagine?!) – involves using picture cards to spark a storytelling session over a hot brew. Free.

Indigo Project Presents Alice in Wonderland @ Platform Youth Theatre, N7
