A moving mini-documentary showcasing the power of data in treating Parkinson's

I’m amazed by the end result based on the little time (and budget) Speak had to work with. I’m most pleased that Speak managed to bring an educational but still very personal feeling into the film.

the challenge

Global Kinetics specialises in innovative medical technology that accurately records, quantifies and reports the symptoms of neurological diseases. Its lead product is the Parkinson's KinetiGraph™ (PKG), a watch-like wearable device that tracks the movement symptoms experienced by Parkinson’s disease patients.

We were asked to create a short documentary that would follow a Parkinson’s patient as they were fitted with their first PKG. The client wanted the film to communicate not just the bare facts of what the PKG does but also the role it plays in conversations between doctors and patients and how it can inform treatment plans.

what we did

In order to move on from the product demo films previously made we recommended more empathetic filmmaking, placing the patient at the heart of the story, ensuring the final video would be more meaningful to its audience of Parkinson’s patients, their carers and healthcare professionals.

It was important that our featured patient, Fred, and his wife, Olive, felt comfortable talking about their experiences so we appointed Alana McVerry to direct the film. Alana specialises in sensitive-access docs and has made films for the BBC, Channel 4 and Vice among others.

The four-minute film was released on the European Parkinson’s Disease Association’s website, on Parkinson’s Life and social channels. We also produced a shorter edit for social that would function both as a trailer for the full film and as a standalone story.

the outcome

From original idea through to the shoot, the edit, subtitling in multiple languages and delivery of the final film, we collaborated closely with Global Kinetics to deliver the film they had pictured on time and on budget.
